Snowshoeing is an easy and inexpensive way for a family to get outdoors and get moving during the winter. Snowshoeing does not require any athletic ability or skill; so if your kids can walk, they can snowshoe! Snowshoes are easy for kids to maneuver in and they are sufficiently lightweight so that kids can walk in them for a long hike. Children of all ages will love to snowshoe! Since it is so simple to learn, kids of all ages can quickly adapt to this fun winter sport.
Below are some helpful tips to get you and your family started on your snowshoe adventure.
Tip #1 Stay Warm:
As our motto “when the kids are cold, the day is done" goes, we stand behind this statement 100%. Nothing is more painful when your kids are crying because they are cold. Having the proper winter gear will keep your kid warm and happy. Make sure the kids are equipped with:
- Footwear: Insulated, waterproof boots are the best.
- Clothing: Moisture-wicking base layers, an insulating layer, and a waterproof, breathable outer shell.
- Accessories: Waterproof gloves and a warm hat.
- Extras: Backpack filled with bottled water, snacks, map, first aid kit, and a flashlight. Trekking poles are also suggested for balance and steep terrain. For the extra sunny days, don’t forget sunglasses and sunscreen.
Tip #2 Places To Go:
There is no need to drive far to snowshoe. If there's 4" or more snow on the ground, you can easily start your family adventure in your own backyard. However, if you are looking for a longer trek, check out these local destinations:
- Cross country ski resorts
- Local trails
- State and National Parks
- National Forests
Tip #3 Play Games:
Just because snowshoeing is easy doesn’t mean it has to be boring. As a family activity, make your adventure fun with the following games:
- Scavenger Hunt – Write a list of objects you’re likely to see on your trip, such as a deer, a squirrel, or a pine tree. Make it fun and help them use their imaginations.
- Animal Tracking – When you come across animal tracks, ask your kid(s) what sort of animal made this track. Bring a guidebook to check for the right answer. This is also a great way for kids to learn about the different animals in the wild.
- Other Activities – Freeze tag, red light green light, a snowshoe race, building a fort...the possibilities are endless. Be creative, have fun, and let your kids use their imaginations to the fullest.
Tip #4 Have Fun
Winter only last three to five months depending on where you’re located. Enjoy the snow and start your snowshoe adventure today!
