It’s Honey Month!
Honey is a great ingredient to keep on hand when you're planning an adventure. It's a natural energy booster and has been proven to provide benefits to the body before, during and after physical activity. An added bonus is that it's tasty too!
We have honey bees to thank for this scrumptious, helpful treat. Many kids have misconceptions of honeybees. The thought of bees can strike a stinging fear. They can often get them mixed up with their uglier, meaner relatives; the wasp and yellow jacket. It’s important for kids to understand how important bees and other pollinators are for us and the earth.
Without bees, we would be lacking many delicious foods that we enjoy on a daily basis. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, “one mouthful in three of the food you eat directly or indirectly depends on pollination by honey bees.” Without honey bees, your kids can kiss those delicious PBJ sandwiches goodbye and only be able to dream of vanilla ice cream instead of enjoying it on a hot day.
Honeybee colonies are declining at an alarming rate, causing great concern for their future as well as the human race.
Luckily, awareness has spread and there are people joining the fight. For example, Union Station in Denver, CO has 4 beehives on their roof along with rooftop gardens for the bees to pollinate. This is a win-win situation as the bees have a safe place and the honey from the bees will be used by the restaurants in the building below.
Celebrate Honey Month by educating your kids on the importance of bees. Visit Savebees.org to learn what you can do at home to become a friend of the bees.
And what would Honey Month be without some honey to celebrate?!
