National Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month

This January marks the 3rd year of Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month. For those that don’t know, LSSM is an organization that encourages everyone, young and old, to take lessons for and continue learning about their preferred method down the mountain. The organization’s goal extends farther than attracting newcomers to snow sports. Their message is that everyone should take time out for lessons, regardless of your skill level. Maybe you’re the newest of the newbies, maybe you’ve been at it as long as you can remember, or maybe you’re stuck at that plateau and feel this is as good as you’ll get.
Whatever your level of ability, we could all stand to learn a few new things. Take for instance the ever-increasing popularity of backcountry riding. With the absence of trails and manicured runs comes increased risk, as well as responsibility. Take a class on backcountry safety and learn the do’s and don’ts before hiking out into the wilderness. LSSM also has a website dedicated to the month, full of information for those looking to improve or get started, and parents looking to find their kids some lessons. Find a local resort with a ski school or locate a local retailer. The site also has plenty of kid-friendly areas where kids can learn more about ski and snowboard safety, and play fun and informational games.
 If you were ever thinking about taking up either sport, or were considering starting your kids in ski school, now is the time to do it. Snow levels are down this season, which means lift lines will be shorter, and the deals will be sweeter. Now would be a good time to mention that many resorts around the country are offering deals on kids and adult ski schools for this special month. Even if you don’t go the instructor route, grab a few knowledgeable, and patient, friends or family members and have your own ski school for a day. The point of it all is simply to ride more often, ride more responsibly, and just have fun.
