Making Winter Break Fun for You and the Kids

Making Winter Break Fun for You and the Kids

Posted by WinterKids on Friday, December 26, 2014

Now that Christmas has come and gone, we are in that in-between holiday stage: New Years is short of a week away, yet we are still in a celebratory state. Kids are off school for winter break, and most likely, you've got some time off work as well.

With the stress of the holidays mostly over (gift-wrapping, preparing for the big dinner, etc.), you can finally take a much-deserved break and spend some quality time with your family. If you're trying to find ways to entertain your kids (and maybe your niece or nephew, or other extended family still in town), but exhausted from the holidays (and the last thing you want to do is come up with fun, family-friendly activities), don't fret: we've got you covered! Check out these fun things you can do with kids that are a mix between high energy and low-key activities that everyone can enjoy.

The end of December is a great time to see a movie in a theater with the family. Plan to see an afternoon matinee movie for less expensive ticket prices, and then have an early dinner out at a restaurant. A movie and low-key dinner is the perfect way to unwind with the family after a big holiday--plus, you'll get a break from cooking as well! (Our movie recommendations: Annie, Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb, and Penguins of Madagascar)

Whether you choose an indoor rink or an outdoor rink, ice skating is fun for kids and parents of any age and ability. Most regional ice rinks offer low-cost admission and rental fees, so you don't have to worry about renting skates before you go to the rink. Just make sure the kids are dressed in layers and wear gloves or mittens--even if you're skating indoors!

Bowling is a fun way to spend an afternoon with the kids. Bowling is not only really fun, but all that moving around is also really good for you! We suggest taking the kids to try Candlepin Bowling if your family hasn't yet--the bowling balls are smaller, and a lot easier for kids to roll.

Go Sledding

SleddingBigHave fresh fallen snow on the ground? Go sledding! It doesn't have to be a huge hill or a record-shattering blizzard to have fun doing this classic outdoor winter activity. Just make sure the kids are bundled up in warm kids winter clothing, and head on out to your nearest hill with a plastic sled and a camera to catch all of the fun memories you will make.

This is a must-do activity that can still be enjoyed in the days after Christmas. Whether you choose to pack up the family in the car and drive neighborhood to neighborhood to check out each house's unique light display, or visit somewhere like the local zoo or botanical gardens for their professionally set-up light displays, you and the kids are sure to be in awe--and back in the spirit of the season--with the festive lights you will see.
