Halloween Costumes Fit for the Cold

Halloween Costumes Fit for the Cold

Growing up, Halloween was always a popular holiday in our house. Sure, the free candy was always a perk but my mom made sure to make it an exciting holiday all around. Let’s face it, she made any holiday exciting what with her extravagant Easter egg hunts, hand drawn advent calendars or loving Valentine's cards forwarded and specially stamped from the town of Loveland, CO. On a daily basis, kids don’t get to make a ton of choices on matters.

What they don’t realize is that they will miss that aspect of life once they’re an adult with difficult decisions coming at them from every direction-but that’s beside the point. With Halloween, kids get a little more say in things. It can be exciting for a child to decide what he or she wants to be for Halloween. Perhaps the red light goes up when it comes to certain age inappropriate ideas, but helping your child choose a fun way to express their interests and personality should be an enjoyable process. The decision can be a bit more limited for those that live in colder climates. As a kid that grew up in a small ski resort town, I’m very familiar with this. I was lucky enough to have a creative and talented mom who would fashion wonderful costumes for me-and I’m even luckier that she still helps me craft my costumes in my adulthood. This gave her the flexibility to create a costume that would fit over the bulky jackets and pants to stay warm while trick-or-treating. Here are a few tips to think about for costumes in colder temperatures.

Costumes that already consist of big clothing are a simple solution for combining cold weather and dressing up. A clown costume almost always entails a loose, baggy costume, perfect to fit over hulking jackets. Clowns can get a bad rap due to the various scary interpretations out there, but it’s still possible to create a kid-friendly version. What makes a clown costume fun is how versatile it can be. There are many ways to personalize a clown costume, such as using a favorite color for the wig or tailored face paint. There are also several versions of clowns. There is the typical circus clown, a joker or even a mime. Help crush the scary stereotype of clowns and make them fun again. Another option is to choose a costume that is basically a jacket already. These are usually animal costumes. For example, lions and bears are furry and bulky. There are many options for animal costumes that are suits.

Accessories are an easy way to help portray a costume through winter gear and add a fun touch. There are many hats and gloves that resemble animals and can be used to serve a purpose beyond just trick-or-treating. Maybe the costume itself can’t fit over the jacket or snow pants, but adding accessories such as a tiara for a princess or a helmet for a sports player will help get the message across.

Some kids insist on the store bought costumes, or maybe aren’t confident in their mother’s DIY skills. While some of these can be easily tweaked for cold weather, some not so much.  An easy fix is to purchase the costume a size or two bigger, as long as they don’t mind it being big when worn without a jacket. And that way it can last a little longer in the dress up box!

Don’t let the cold deflate your kid’s eagerness and imagination for Halloween. More often than not, there’s a way to make any costume possible, for any weather condition. Help encourage creativity and fun each year with the costume choosing process. Halloween doesn’t have to be fun for just that day; the lead up can be exciting as well.
