Ski resorts are ideal destinations in the winter months, for obvious reasons. You need snow to ski, right? And ski resorts certainly have the snow, especially this season. Even if they’re not getting pounded by fresh snow every week, many resorts now have snow-making machines to help make up for any potential depletion of snow. Ski resorts more than ever are changing their image to a mountain resort, offering a wide variety of activities other than skiing. So, don’t worry if you or your kids aren’t too into skiing, there’s plenty to do on your winter vacation. Here are some of our favorite ski resort activities.
Sleigh Rides
What better way to take in the views then gliding on snow, cozied up in a blanket in a horse-drawn sleigh? With the ringing of sleigh bells and the sound of the horse’s hoofs on the ground, sleigh rides are a relaxing, fun way to get the family out and about at the resort. Kids often get a chance to feed the horses and learn some fun facts. And don’t worry if the resort you choose is low on snow, many drivers can put wheels on the sleigh so you can still have your carriage ride.
Kid Zones
Check to see if your resort has a kid zone. Keystone Resort in Colorado has the Keystone Kidtopia, a program that has daily activities for kids of all ages. From face painting, cookie hour, scavenger hunts and even a giant snow fort with hidden tunnels and slides, there’s something for everyone.
Tubing
Many resorts have tubing hills that provide loads of fun. Kids and adults alike will feel the childlike thrill of flying down the mountain on an inner tube. Promote friendly competition and have a race between family members.
Dog-Sled Rides
One of the most memorable things you can do when visiting a ski resort is to take a dogsled ride across the snowy tundra. The pure excitement and enthusiasm from the dogs is contagious. A dog sled ride provides many smiles while taking in the views.
Ice Skating
A timeless classic, numerous resorts have ponds where you can test out your balance skills. Lace up a pair of skates and glide under the night sky. Warm up with some hot cocoa in the warming house after.
Watch a Movie
Sure, you can do this anywhere but sometimes it’s nice to fully relax and have a family movie night. Whether checking out what’s showing at the local theater or renting a movie to bring back to your condo this will always bring the family together and spark great dinner conversation.
Whether your family will be hitting the slopes or not shouldn’t matter if you want to take a snow vacation. There’s plenty to do besides skiing. Even if not skiing, your kids will still need the right winter apparel to fully enjoy your winter escape. As we know, “when the kids are cold, the day is done”. So bundle up no matter what activity you choose.
